Icebergs Dining Room & Bar: A bit of a disappointment

It's a tradition in our family that we go out to dinner for our birthdays. Somewhere nice and a little bit fancy. This year it was a bit of a rigmarole to book somewhere for my birthday. I wanted Momofuku but couldn't get a booking. I tried Movida but could only get a booking for like 6pm, which is just a nanna time to have dinners. So I booked Icebergs. I've been there before and really enjoyed the food, but it was about 8 years ago, so I figured it was time to re-visit. But oh how it has changed, and not in a good way. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't all bad. The service was fantastic, and the night we went the tide was really high so the view was quite dramatic, but lets face it, I went there for the food and that's what was wrong with the place.

We started the meal with Gamberetty (little shrimp dusted in flour deep fried and eaten whole) which was delicious. Nice and crunchy and moorish. I had a crab salad special for entree, after all it was the special. It was OK, but really not what I'd call 'special'. For main I had their fish of the day, char grilled. And it really was just that, a fillet of fish, char grilled so that it was a bit dry and needed salt, with a piece of lettuce or two on the side, as well as a couple of OK sauces. Then dessert...lemon zabaglione tartlet so runny the lemon didn't want to stay in it's tartlet.

It makes me sad when places like Icebergs go downhill so much. It's such an iconic venue that I'm sure has a lot of overseas tourists visit it, I'd hate to think that's the impression they get of our food scene in Sydney...And we know we can do much better thank this!

Oh, and sorry no pics today folks. Nothing felt worth taking a picture of.

  1. The fact that you couldn't get a table at two of your "go to"s is what frustrates me about Sydney food culture... a bit too up itself sometimes. Unless you left it to the last minute ;)
